How do I use DAME reusable period pants?

How do DAME reusable period pants work?

DAME reusable period pants work through a clever, multi-layer design that keeps you feeling dry and confident.

The top layer, often made from soft, breathable organic cotton, gently wicks moisture away from your skin. Underneath, a super absorbent core locks in fluid, while SILVADUR™ technology fights off odor-causing bacteria. Finally, a thin, waterproof lining acts as a trusty barrier to prevent any sneaky leaks.

If you're curious to learn more about the magic behind DAME's period pants, check out our in-depth blog post on how period pants actually work.

Are your reusable period pants hygienic? (Do they smell?)

Absolutely! Our reusable period pants are designed with your hygiene and comfort as top priorities.

Our clever technologies work hard to fight off bacteria and keep odours at bay, so you can feel fresh and confident all day long. With a little love and care, our period pants are a smell-free, hygenic solution for all your period needs.

Can I use DAME period pants on their own?

This really depends on you and your flow. Period pants are a great replacement for traditional period products, however you can also use them as a backup with your tampon, cup or even pad

All of our period pants have an absorbency rating which you can use to understand the best option for your flow.

We recommend trying your pants at home on the first wear to understand how they best work for you.

What are DAME reusable period pants made of?

DAME period pants are made of organic cotton jersey, and feature our leak-proof construction in the gusset for ultimate period protection.

Want more detail?

  • The main body of the pants are made from soft jersey and feel like your regular underwear (organic cotton).

  • The top cotton layer in the gusset keeps you cool and comfortable (responsibly sourced cotton).

  • The odour-proof inner layers are soft and absorbent with powerful antimicrobial odour control for durable freshness (cotton, polyester).

  • Additionally, there is a waterproof layer in our unique gusset construction to prevent leaking (polyurethane).

How should I care for my DAME reusable period pants?

For best results, rinse your pants before washing in cold water, then add to an existing dark wash.

Our reusable period pants can be washed up to 40°c and should be air dried. Please don’t use fabric softener or bleach as it will affect the absorbency of your period pants. DAME period pants should never be tumble dried.

Got more questions about looking after your period pants? Get in touch here.

How often should I change my reusable period pants?

As a general guideline, change your period pants every 8-12 hours, or more often if you have a heavy flow. If you're unsure when it's time for a swap, our blog post on how often to change period pants covers the signs to look out for.

Can DAME reusable period pants be used for urinary incontinence?

Our period pants are not designed for severe incontinence, however they can be used for light leaks. Please use the absorbency rating as a guide, or get in touch here.

How do I know which size to get?

Check our period pant size guide to work out which size is best for you.

If you can’t see your size we would love your feedback here.

Can I use DAME period pants as swimwear?

While DAME period pants are designed to handle light splashing, we don't recommend using period pants as swimwear. Prolonged exposure to pool or ocean water can compromise the absorbency, stretch, and protective barriers of the fabric over time.

For a worry-free swimming experience during your period, we suggests a reliable menstrual cup or tampon instead.

What if I need to return the period pants?

If there's a problem with your order please let us know so we can make it right. You can return our period pants so long as they're sent back unused and in the original packaging.

If you think there is a fault with your pants after use, please get in touch and we'll make sure to find a solution.

When trying on your pants for the first time, please try them on over your own underwear to check the size is right.

Are the fabrics used in DAME period pants safe?

DAME has a due diligence process which ensures the components in all of our products are tested to current industry standards and do not contain any harmful chemicals.

Our testing programmes cover certification under EU REACH regulations and OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 which includes testing for per- and poly-fluorinated alkyl compounds (PFAS). Our fabric treatments are Bluesign approved.

Every component from fabric to trim has been tested for harmful substances to help protect human health and the environment from the risks of chemicals.

Can DAME period pants be reused?

Of course! DAME period pants are designed to be reused time and time again.

They're made with premium, responsibly sourced materials and built to last, so you can feel good about your choice for both your body and the planet.

DAME Reusable Pads

What are DAME reusable pads made of?

Our reusable pads are made using DAMEdry™ technology with five layers working together for total period protection.

  • Top wicking section to keep you cool and dry with antimicrobial odour control agent to keep you feeling fresh

  • Outer layers in DAME green single knit jersey with natural cotton and soft handle for comfort against your skin

  • Inner layers include high performance, organic cotton-rich fabric that absorbs 10 times its weight in under 2 seconds

  • Infused with SILVADUR™ antimicrobial silver ions to inhibit bacterial growth, control odours and create long lasting freshness without toxic chemicals

  • Additionally there is a waterproof layer inside the pad to prevent leaking

All materials are manufactured without harmful chemicals or finishes. We use natural fibres wherever possible, while making sure DAME pads give you high performance and product longevity.

What are DAME reusable liners made of?

Our reusable liners are made using three layers of fabrics working together:

  • Top wicking section to keep you cool and dry with antimicrobial odour control agent to keep you feeling fresh

  • Outer layers in DAME green single knit jersey with natural cotton and soft handle for comfort against your skin

  • Inner layer of light-weight, absorbent terry for daily comfort

All materials are manufactured without harmful chemicals or finishes. We use natural fibres wherever possible, while making sure DAME pads give you high performance and product longevity.

How do I use a DAME reusable pad?

Using a reusable pad is pretty similar to using a disposable pad. Place the pad in your underwear, with the black DAMEDry™ wicking material facing upwards and fasten the wings around your underwear with the snap popper.

What pad absorbencies does DAME offer?

We currently offer three levels of absorbency in our DAMEdry™ pads:

  • DAME Reusable Liner - ideal for very light flows, spotting and discharge. Absorbs up to 6ml of blood (length: 17cm)

  • DAME Reusable Regular Pad - absorbs the equivalent of 1 DAME Super tampon (9-12ml). Good for most days of your period (length: 20.5cm)

  • DAME Reusable Night Time Pad - absorbs the equivalent of 1 DAME Super Plus tampon (12-15ml). The longer size and extra absorbency is perfect for night time (length: 28cm)

What is a Mini or Interlabial Pad?

DAME interlabial pads are small reusable pads which are rolled and placed between the labia. This can catch spotting and discharge or help avoid leaks and stains by controlling and directing your flow.

They are perfect for spotting, light leaks and discharge. Alternatively, you can use them as a backup alongside other menstrual products. They’re an ideal option for tampon and cup users as they give you that extra sense of security and protection. They can also be used with pads or period pants to help prevent leaking as well as controlling and directing flow, especially when you have a heavy or particularly ‘gushing’ flow.

How often should I change my DAME reusable pad?

We recommend changing your pad every 4-6 hours. That said, it's a good idea to check your pads more frequently the first few times you wear them to understand how they work for you and your flow. Please note this is just a benchmark, as only you know your flow.

Tip - generally, the same time limits that apply to tampons or pads can be applied to interlabial pads.

How should I care for my DAME reusable pad?

For best results, rinse or soak your pads and liners in cold water, then add to an existing dark wash. Our reusable pads can be washed up to 40°c and should be air dried. Please don’t use fabric softener or bleach as it will affect the absorbency of the pad.

Should I prewash my DAME reusable pads?

Always pre-wash your reusable period pads before first use. This will help activate the absorbent fabric. Please don't use any fabric softener as it will reduce the absorbency of the pad.

Will my DAME pads stain?

Our reusable pads should not stain, although rinsing in cold water before washing should help prevent stains building up over time. If you are concerned about staining, try not to rinse in hot water, as this will set the blood in the fabric. Make sure to wash within 48 hours of use.

If you’re having any issues with stains, please get in touch here

How do I use DAME reusable pads in public bathrooms?

We hope that you’ll feel comfortable changing your pad in a public bathroom but we totally get that people have their own personal preferences. We’ve designed our reusable pads for quick and easy changing whether in a private or public bathroom.

If you are out and about, simply fold each end of the pad inwards and clip the wings over the top - it should look a bit like a little envelope. Pop the folded pad in our waterproof DAME Dry Bag (included in the Reusable Pad Set or to purchase separately). This bag is odour tight so there's no risk of leaking or smells coming from your bag while you're still out.

Once home, you can wash your pad following the care instructions.

How do I wash Interlabial pads?

Taking care of DAME’s interlabial pads is easy - after every use, rinse thoroughly or soak in cold water, then machine wash up to 40 degrees in a mixed load of laundry. We suggest using a laundry bag, avoid using fabric conditioner and line dry only. Not only is this better for the environment but it also prolongs the life of your pad!

What are DAME Interlabial Pads made from?

We decided to develop our own interlabial pads after realising how comfortable and adaptable they are. The DAME interlabial pads are cotton rich; making them super soft, and comfortable, ideal to be worn so close against the skin. We have also developed our pads with an antimicrobial control finish to reduce odour. In an effort to reduce waste our interlabial pads are made using the offcuts from our EveryDAME period pants and reusable liners!

Are the fabrics used in DAME period pads safe?

DAME has a due diligence process which ensures the components in all of our products are tested to current industry standards and do not contain any harmful chemicals. Our testing programmes cover certification under EU REACH regulations and OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 which includes testing for per- and poly-fluorinated alkyl compounds (PFAS). Our fabric treatments are Bluesign approved. Every component from fabric to trim has been tested for harmful substances to help protect human health and the environment from the risks of chemicals.

DAME Period Cup

What is the DAME Period Cup?

We’ve developed a revolutionary self-sanitising menstrual cup, powered by natural, biocide-free Saniconcentrates™. This means no more boiling or sanitising required between wears,  just rinse, wipe and reuse. The menstrual cup is a comfortable and super sustainable alternative to tampons and pads. It’s inserted similarly to a tampon and works by collecting your period blood, which you then empty out.

Which size cup is right for me?

The DAME Period Cup is available in 2 sizes. The M is 43mm diameter and 67mm length, and generally works best  for those under 30 who haven't given birth vaginally. The L is 46mm diameter and 67mm length, and generally works best for those over 30 or who have given birth vaginally. Once inserted your cup should feel comfortable.

Still unsure? Reach out to our customer care team here.

Can I use a DAME Period Cup with an IUD or coil?

You can use the DAME Period Cup with an IUD or coil, but consult your doctor first. If the seal of the menstrual cup is not broken before removal, you may risk dislodging your IUD due to the suction created, but in most cases there is no issue.

How do I insert the DAME Period Cup?

Ensure you have washed your hands before handling your DAME Period Cup. Three different folds you can use to insert the cup are the “C Fold”, the “7 Fold” and the “Punch Down”. Try out these options and see what works for you. To insert the cup we suggest squatting, popping your leg up or sitting on the toilet. Fold the cup, and insert it into your vagina. You will find that wetting the cup under the tap, or using some personal lubricant will help with insertion. A lot of videos make it look easy, but it can be challenging the first few times you try, so don’t worry! If you are struggling, take a break and try a different folding method or position. Taking a warm bath or shower to relax can also help.

How does the DAME Period Cup stay in place?

Your menstrual cup will stay in place by creating a seal once inserted into your vagina. Ensure the holes around the rim of the cup stay clean and clear so that your cup can create a leak-proof seal.

How do I know if my DAME Period Cup is inserted securely?

Once the cup is inserted, squeeze the bottom once or twice and check the seal by gently tugging on the stem. You should feel a little resistance. If your cup moves around or feels uncomfortable, it may not be inserted correctly. Try repositioning the cup with your fingers, or removing and reinserting it. Once it is in correctly it should feel round or oval, with no noticeable folds.

How do I know if the DAME Period Cup is in the right place?

Your menstrual cup should sit lower than a tampon, near to the vaginal entrance. If you find that the stem is uncomfortable this can be trimmed - we suggest taking a little off at a time to ensure you are still comfortable removing the cup, and take care not to cut the cup itself.

Do menstrual cups hurt?

No! Wearing a menstrual cup should not hurt at all. If the cup feels uncomfortable or if you have any difficulty peeing this will likely mean that the cup is not in the right position. Try repositioning the cup with your fingers, or removing and reinserting it. You should not be able to feel the cup once inserted correctly. If you feel any discomfort from the stem you may need to trim it - we suggest taking a little off at a time to ensure you are still comfortable removing the cup, and take care not to cut the cup itself.

Will my menstrual cup leak?

If you are wearing your menstrual cup correctly it should not leak. If you are finding you are experiencing leaks, it may mean that the cup is not inserted correctly and has not formed a seal properly. Feel with your fingers to ensure the cup is fully open, and positioned comfortably in your vagina. It should sit lower down than a tampon. Because your vagina is at an angle, try inserting the cup horizontally towards your tailbone, rather than upwards.

Can my menstrual cup get lost inside me?

There is nowhere for your cup to get lost inside you, as it's impossible for the cup to pass through your cervix into the uterus.

Can I wear my DAME Period Cup whilst exercising?

Cups are a great option whilst exercising, especially swimming. They are completely internal, so won’t interfere with your favourite exercise clothing. They also last for hours, and won’t cause any discomfort. If your cup leaks it will be because it’s not been inserted correctly, so we recommend making sure you’re a pro at inserting it before you do anything too strenuous.

Can I wear my DAME Period Cup whilst sleeping?

Sleeping is when a period cup really comes into its own. You can wear your cup for up to 12 hours without having to empty it, depending on your flow. We recommend getting used to using the cup first as everyone is different, but empty it before going to bed and you can have a mighty lie-in the next morning without the need to change a tampon or pad!

How much blood can a DAME Period Cup hold?

THe DAME menstrual cup holds over three times more blood than a regular tampon. The M has a capacity up to 25 ml, and the L has a capacity up to 30 ml.

How do you know when your menstrual cup is full?

This really depends on your flow. The good news is that you can wear your menstrual cup for up to 12 hours, but you will most likely need to empty it more often on your heavier days. If you are new to menstrual cups, try checking your cup every 4-6 hours whilst you get used to a routine of emptying it. Some signs your cup may be getting full might be a bubbling sensation or heavy feeling, light leaks or wetness.

Can you change a menstrual cup in a public bathroom?

It’s likely that at some point you will have to empty your cup at work or in a public toilet. Ideally you should always give your cup a rinse after emptying it, but this can be tricky on the go. If you have a water bottle, you could use that to give it a quick rinse over the toilet in the cubicle, but if that’s not an option then you can give it a pat with some loo roll before reinserting, and  then give it a rinse when you next have access to water.

Is it worth wearing a menstrual cup on light days?

Unlike tampons, menstrual cups work by collecting blood, rather than absorbing it. Lighter days are a perfect time to wear your cup as it will not cause dryness, and you can wear it safely for up to 12 hours.

How do I remove the DAME Period Cup?

Ensure you have washed your hands before handling your DAME Period Cup. To remove a menstrual cup, first get into a position which is comfortable like sitting or squatting slightly, or sitting on the loo. It’s important to release the seal before removing your menstrual cup. Gently squeeze the base of the cup or insert a finger between the cup and your vagina to release the seal, you will hear and feel once the cup becomes free. Keeping your fingers on the base of the cup, you may need to angle your cup slightly to remove it, and ensure the cup remains upright with the fluid inside. If you are worried about making a mess the first time, try removing your menstrual cup in the shower.

I am having trouble reaching my DAME Period Cup inside me

If you have a high cervix you may find that the cup sits higher in your vagina, and this may make it a little hard to reach. Try squatting down or sitting on the toilet and reach your finger inside your vagina in a “beckoning” motion, hook it onto  your menstrual cup, and pinch with your thumb. Most importantly, don’t panic! Your menstrual cup has nowhere to go, and can’t get lost. If you are feeling frustrated or sore, take a break. Once you have mastered what works for you, inserting and removing the cup will become a comfortable part of your period routine.

How do I clean the DAME Period Cup?

If you were using any other cup you would need to boil it for 5-10 minutes between uses to sanitise it. The DAME Period Cup is powered by natural, biocide-free Saniconcentrates™, meaning that the the material is resistant to 99.9% of bacteria and viruses and does not need to be boiled or sterilised. Simply rinse the cup under clean water and dry, then store in your DAME cotton bag between uses. If using the DAME Period Cup in a public bathroom without access to water, it can be wiped clean with tissue before reinserting.

How long does the DAME Period Cup last?

The DAME Period Cup is made from durable, medical grade TPE and will last for many years of use if the recommended care instructions are followed. If you notice any changes to the appearance of the cup, or visible damage, your cup may need replacing. Please get in touch with our customer care team here for further advice.

How much money can I save using a DAME Period Cup?

A DAME Period Cup can save you over £1,000 if used for up to 10 years. In the UK women spend on average £10 a month on period products, which equates to £130 a year.

Can the DAME Period Cup be boiled?

Contrary to other period cups, the DAME Period Cup does not need to be boiled! In fact, boiling or sterilising the cup in any way may damage the material and self-sanitising technology. Rinsing until the cup is visibly clean is enough to ensure the hygiene of your cup. If you notice any odour, the cup can be washed in mild soapy water, but please do not use any harsh chemicals on the DAME Period Cup. If you need any more advice, please get in touch here

How is the DAME Period Cup self-sanitising?

The DAME Period Cup is powered by natural, biocide-free Saniconcentrates™, meaning that the cup is resistant to 99.9% of bacteria and viruses (tested to ISO 22196). Saniconcentrate™ contains a biocompatible element that works against bacteria attachment and proliferation, helping the cup to stay clean without the need for sterilisation or boiling. The Saniconcentrates™  are integral to the material, so they will not rub off or degrade over time.

Is the DAME Period Cup safe?

DAME has a due diligence process which ensures the components in all of our products are tested to current industry standards and do not contain any harmful chemicals. Our testing programmes cover certification under EU REACH regulations which includes testing for per- and poly-fluorinated alkyl compounds (PFAS).

Our DAME Period Cup isn't a medical device in the UK or EU, but we wanted it to be totally safe, so we designed it to medical standards anyway. It is made from medical grade TPE, free from silicone and latex, and certified to the following standards:

  • Biocompatibility and vaginal irritation according to ISO 10993-12:2021

  • Cytotoxicity according to ISO 10993-5:2009

  • ISO 22196:2011

  • Chemical compliance including lead. cadmium, colour release, BPA, PAH (phthalates)

  • Vegan society approved

Can using a menstrual cup cause Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)?

Toxic Shock Syndrome is extremely rare but it's very serious and can be fatal. It's caused by bacteria usually found in the nose or vagina. Women, men and children can develop TSS. Menstrual TSS is associated with tampon use, particularly when a tampon is used for too long, but use of any internal vaginal device carries some risk of TSS, including the menstrual cup.

A few ways to reduce the risk of TSS when using the DAME Period Cup:

  • Do not use any internal vaginal devices (including a menstrual cup) if you have previously been diagnosed with TSS

  • Ensure you wash your hands before handling your cup, including inserting or removing your cup

  • Ensure your DAME Period Cup is rinsed thoroughly before storing in the DAME bag

Early treatment is very important.

Symptoms to look out for:

  • Flu like symptoms

  • Muscle aches

  • Sore throat

  • Fainting or near fainting

  • A sudden high fever over 39℃

Contact a doctor if you have any of these signs. Mention you are menstruating and are worried about TSS. Make sure to talk to your doctor about which period products are safe to use if you've had TSS in the past.

Can I use my cup cleaning fluid with my DAME Period Cup?

You do not need anything apart from clean running water, but the aim is to remove all visible matter, so you can use warm soapy water if it's needed.

DAME Organic Tampons

What are DAME tampons made of?

100% natural organic cotton, that's it. No plastic cover. No synthetics. No harsh chemicals.

Our tampons are made to OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 which means they’ve been proven not to contain known harmful chemicals regulated by REACH and tested for per- and poly-fluorinated alkyl compounds (PFAS).

How are DAME tampons better for my body?

The average woman uses 12,000 tampons in her lifetime. That's a tampon inside your vagina for a total of 7.5 years.

Most tampons are made from synthetic fibres, plastics, and treated with harsh chemicals. We think it’s time to be honest about what goes into women’s bodies, so we make our tampons with nothing but organic cotton.

What are DAME tampon wrappers made from?

Our organic cotton tampons are wrapped in cellophane, a material derived from plant cellulose. Unlike man-made plastic polymers, which are largely derived from petroleum, cellophane is natural. Originating from a natural source means it can biodegrade with the help of microorganisms in the soil, just like plants and leaves.

The cellophane used to wrap the tampons is ‘OK Compost’ home compostability certified and will biodegrade within 2-4 months or 1 month if it ends up in freshwater conditions.

What tampon absorbencies does DAME offer?

We offer three absorbencies of tampon:

Regular tampons, which absorb 6-9ml of blood (good for most days of your period)

Super tampons, which absorb 9-12ml of blood (extra absorption for heavier days)

Super plus tampons, which absorb 12-15ml of blood (we've got you covered for the heaviest days)

Make sure to always use a tampon with the minimum absorbency to match your flow.

How do I use a DAME tampon?

If this is your first time, we recommend choosing a day when your bleeding is moderate.

-Wash your hands, unwrap your tampon and insert into your DAME reusable tampon applicator if you prefer the help of an applicator.

-Once your tampon is loaded, insert the applicator into your vagina at a 45 degree angle, then use the plunger to push the tampon in - stop pushing just before the plunger clicks into the applicator. Your tampon should now be comfortably in place.

-If you don't have a reusable applicator, or prefer to use your tampons without an applicator, then you can insert DAME tampons with your finger too.

- When it's time to remove your tampon, pull it out gently and slowly. Unlike most tampons which have a thin plastic sheath around them, our tampons are made from organic cotton only, meaning they may not slip out as easily.

Got more questions? Get in touch here

How often should I change a DAME tampon?

Make sure to change your tampon every 4-8 hours. If you’re switching to organic tampons for the first time, it’s a good idea to check your tampon a bit more frequently than before.

While the absorbencies of DAME tampons conform to industry standards, they do absorb slightly differently to conventional tampons. This is because ours rely on the natural absorbency of organic cotton and *nothing else*. Unlike conventional tampons, you won’t find any plastic, rayon, polyester or other synthetics that impact absorbency.

Got more questions? Get in touch here

How should I dispose of my DAME tampons?

DAME tampons are fully biodegradable so when you put your tampon in the bin, it will return to nature. Please don't flush your used tampons. Sadly, every day, 2.5 million tampons are flushed down British loos which end up on our beaches and in our oceans.

If you have a personal compost heap, the tampon will biodegrade in around 6 months, dependent on conditions.

Can I wear a tampon at night?

Yes you can, just make sure to insert a fresh one before going to bed, and change it as soon as you wake up in the morning.

If you sleep more than 8 hours, it's best to use a reusable pad or period underwear instead.

A few ways to reduce the risk:

  • Use a reusable pad (or period underwear) instead of a tampon at least once a day during your period
  • Use a tampon with the minimum absorbency needed
  • Clean your hands before and after using a tampon
  • Always change your tampon every 4-8 hours

Are DAME organic tampons available to buy in store?

You can find DAME tampons in Waitrose, Boots and Sainsbury's, along with the

DAME reusable tampon applicator. You can also find us in online and independent stores. Check out our list of stockists here.

Can I flush a DAME tampon?

Please never flush your tampon down the loo, they block drains and ruin our beaches. Our tampons are biodegradable so you can pop them into a waste bin or a home composter if you have one (not in the food compost bin).

How long can you keep a DAME tampon in?

Make sure to change your tampon every 4-8 hours depending on your flow.

Can you poop/pee with a DAME tampon in?

Absolutely.

Can I swim with a DAME tampon?

Yes but they will absorb some pool water, so we recommend changing your tampon straight after your swim.

Biodegradable Tampon Wrappers

What are DAME tampon wrappers made from?

DAME tampon wrappers are made from cellophane, a substance made from cellulose that’s derived from wood pulp source from responsibly managed plantations. The wood pulp carries FSC™ (Forest Stewardship Council™) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) Chain of Custody certifications.

What is cellophane?

DAME organic cotton tampons are wrapped in cellophane, a material derives from wood pulp from plant cellulose. Unlike man-made plastic polymers, which are largely derived from petroleum, cellophane is natural. It’s made from cellulose, a component of plants & trees; and more specifically from digested wood pulp. Cellulose is then regenerated as a clear, shiny film. Originating from a natural source means it can biodegrade with the help from microorganisms in the soil, just like plants and leaves!

How long do DAME tampon wrappers take to biodegrade?

The tampon wrapper will biodegrade in around 2-4 months.

The cellophane used to wrap the tampons OK Compost home compostability certified and will also biodegrade within 1 month if it ends up in freshwater conditions.

How do I dispose of my DAME cellophane tampon wrapper?

Cellophane can't be recycled, but it is biodegradable, and so Industrial and home composting are the ideal end-of-use scenarios for cellulose packaging. Our tampon wrappers are OK Compost Home certified.

Although the regular waste bin is not viewed as the perfect option, in landfill the cellophane  will break down to CO2 and water in much the same way as they would in a compost heap without any adverse effects.

When composted, cellophane becomes CO2, water and biomass. The compost, CO2 and water are then used by plants, and so the cycle continues.

To get technical for a minute:

Industrial Composting: Films are certified to EN13432, EN14995, ASTM D6400 and ISO 17088

Home Composting: films are certified to OK Compost Home, NFT51-800 and AS5810

Anaerobic Digestion: Tested to ISO 15985

Marine biodegradation: ASTM D6691-09

Incineration: suitable

Landfill: no adverse effects but no desirable

Mechanical Recycling: films not suitable

Paper Recycling: not suitable /  even though it is produced from wood pulp, it is not re-pulpable and therefore not suitable for paper recycling

If it’s biodegradable, will it decompose over time?

Good news! Your tampon wrapper is shelf-stable and will only break down in a compost environment.

Compostable materials, including compostable packaging materials, need oxygen, moisture, and microorganisms to begin the degradation process.

What’s the difference between true cellulose-based cellophane and (BOPP) plastic based cellophane?

Cellophane ™ has been around for more than 100 years but these days, the product that most people call Cellophane ™ is actually polypropylene. Polypropylene is a thermoplastic polymer, discovered by accident in 1951, and has since become the world’s second most widely manufactured synthetic plastic.

DAME tampon wrappers are made from cellophane, a substance made from cellulose that’s derived from wood pulp source from responsibly managed plantations.

How does cellophane differ from bioplastic?

Cellophane is compostable and biodegradable as it's made from cellulose. DAME tampon wrappers are made from cellulose derived from FSC certified wood pulp. A compostable material disintegrates and become indistinguishable in the compost. It will NOT leave any toxic substances behind.

Bioplastics (Biodegradable plastic) refers to a material breaking down with the help of microorganisms. To be labelled a biodegradable plastic, there is no time limit set on when the product breaks down and these plastics CAN leave behind toxic residue.

Bioplastics come from a renewable or sustainable source, rather than petroleum like traditional plastic.  However, it’s worth remembering that the end result of the plastic product is the same as a non-renewable. plastic.

How is the cellophane for DAME tampon wrappers made?

The cellophane film is made from a renewable and biodegradable cellulose which comes from wood pulp that has been sourced from responsibly managed plantations.  (It’s essentially a form of transparent paper). These trees are grown in conditions which do not require additional irrigation.

The wood pulp carries FSC™ (Forest Stewardship Council™) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) Chain of Custody certifications.

DAME Reusable Tampon Applicator

How big is the DAME applicator?

The insertable length of the DAME reusable tampon applicator is 46mm, but you only need to insert as much as you feel comfortable with to put in your tampon comfortably. The tip of the applicator is 18mm in diameter and increases slightly to 21mm at the widest part by the base.

It’s slightly bigger than a disposable applicator but this size means it works with all tampons from light - super plus. The soft and flexible material ensures the greatest level of ergonomic comfort during application.

How do I use my DAME reusable tampon applicator?

Remember to always remove the lid before use.

We've designed the DAME reusable tampon applicator to be as easy to use as possible. Here are some tips to get you going:

  • Get to know your applicator. It's made up of three parts: the lid, the applicator and the plunger

  • To load your tampon, wash your hands then unwrap your tampon and unravel the string

  • Remove the lid, peel back one of the 'petals' and load the tampon from the top

  • Once your tampon is loaded, insert the applicator into your vagina at a 45 degree angle, then use the plunger to push the tampon in until the plunger clicks into the applicator. Your tampon should now be comfortably in place

Which tampons can I use with the DAME reusable applicator?

Our reusable tampon applicator can be used with any brand non-applicator tampons from light to super plus, although we always recommend going organic with DAME.

Please note that ‘ultra’ and ‘super plus extra’ tampons do not fit our applicator.

How do I care for my DAME Reusable Applicator?

We've designed our reusable tampon applicator to be hygienic. It's made from medical grade Mediprene® with inbuilt Saniconcentrates™ to actively keep it clean and protect against the formation of 99.9% of bacteria and viruses.

This means caring for your applicator is easy, these are our top tips:

  • After use, rinse your applicator under a tap or wipe with a tissue or towel, ensuring it's completely dry.

  • In between uses, keep the lid on and store in your DAME storage pouch (available with our Reusable Applicator Set or separately).

  • The self-sanitising technology will keep your applicator protected from biofilm and bacteria

  • There's no need for dishwashers, boiling water or harsh treatment. These will just shorten the applicator's lifetime and compromise its self-sanitising properties.

How is the DAME reusable applicator self-sanitising?

Our reusable applicator is made of medical grade TPE and is is powered by natural, biocide-free Saniconcentrates™, meaning that the cup is resistant to 99.9% of bacteria and viruses (tested to ISO 22196). Saniconcentrate™ contains a biocompatible element that works against bacteria attachment and proliferation, helping the cup to stay clean without the need for sterilisation or boiling. The Saniconcentrates™ are integral to the material, so they will not rub off or degrade over time. How do I wash my DAME reusable applicator in a public bathroom?

As our applicator does not need to be boiled to clean, simply rinse with cold water at the sink, dry thoroughly and pop back into your storage pouch.

We designed the DAME reusable tampon applicator to be sleek, stylish and easy to use in both private and public toilets but totally understand that you may not always want to wash your applicator in public. That's why you can also clean your applicator with loo roll in the privacy of the cubicle. You could then give it a final rinse with water at the sink or simply put it back in your storage pouch safe in the knowledge that the Saniconcentrates™ are doing their thing and sanitising your applicator for you.

How long will my DAME reusable applicator last?

DAME is a consumer goods company that believes in less consumption. We want all our bathrooms to have fewer things that last longer. That's why we've built our reusable applicator for the long run. If treated well your reusable applicator should last for up to 10 years, and as a commitment to you, we'll replace any part for free if it becomes damaged.

But please remember that the reusable tampon applicator wasn't made for dishwashers, boiling water or harsh chemical treatment. We won't be able to replace any parts that have been mistreated this way.
